May require a valid Georgia driver's license and an insurable driving record. The Garvan Institute of Medical Research 5.0. Must have a working understanding of principles of animal breeding, genetics and behavior of one or more relevant species. In positions involving breeding management, this position will require a Bachelor's degree and one year of experience working with laboratory animals. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A high school diploma or equivalent and five years of animal husbandry/care experience, OR certification as Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) and four years of animal husbandry/care, OR six years of animal husbandry/care experience. Performs related responsibilities as required. Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents. May provide specialized services such as breeding management, aquatic care and management, research support and training of animal resources employees. May monitor temperature, light, humidity and water conditions to ensure a safe and comfortable environment. Observes the general condition of animal housing and notifies appropriate staff of the need for repairs or modifications. May monitor the security and maintenance of facilities, grounds, vehicles, and equipment follows the appropriate procedures for handling intruders, trespassers or unauthorized activities. Monitors and records the condition and security of research animals (may include after hours).

JOB DESCRIPTION: This position is a hybrid of animal care and veterinary technician and works with a high level of independence.
Employees in this position are paid an hourly pay rate, on a bi-weekly basis, and are eligible to receive overtime pay for any hours worked over 40 in a work week.
